Scales are technical devices used in various areas of activity. They are applied in trade and agriculture and are indispensable in production enterprises. Such equipment is also essential in clinical medical institutions and sports. Given the popularity of weighing devices, it’s worth knowing what types of scales exist and what roles they play in different industries.

Types of Scales

Scales are divided into mechanical and electronic.
The principle of mechanical models is based on spring tension — the greater the mass, the more the spring stretches. These devices are resistant to temperature fluctuations, have a low cost, and can be used anywhere since they don’t require electricity or batteries.
Electronic models, on the other hand, ensure more precise weight measurement, can count the number of items on the platform, and generate reports.

Types of Scales by Application

Retail (shop) scales.
Used for weighing goods, performing calculations, and labeling weighed products. They come with or without a column, with a control panel located either on the column or within the housing, and may include a network interface.

Pallet scales.
These are designed for weighing palletized loads and feature a U-shaped platform. They are widely used in logistics companies and warehouses.

Vehicle (truck) scales.
Allow weighing vehicles both loaded and empty, helping to monitor road overloads.

Medical scales.
Available in versions for adults and children, used in healthcare facilities to measure body weight.

Crane (hanging) scales.
Heavy-duty hook scales designed for weighing large loads — with capacities reaching up to 30 tons, depending on the model.

Postal scales.
As the name suggests, used to weigh mail and parcels.

Beam scales.
Designed for long or heavy items, commonly used in transshipment points and construction sites.

Railway wagon scales.
Used for weighing freight wagons with cargo, integrated with computer software for ease of operation.

Laboratory scales.
Provide high measurement precision and are mainly used in pharmacies and laboratories.

Platform scales.
Consist of a platform for placing the load and an electronic display showing the weight — essential in factories and logistics centers.

In Poland, it is also possible to buy pallet trucks with scales, designed for vertical and horizontal transport of pallets, crates, barrels, and other goods. Additionally, animal and milk weighing scales are available for agricultural applications.

Types of Scales by Installation Method

The most popular are tabletop scales, which are compact and lightweight — easy to move and powered by a built-in battery.
Also common are floor scales, typically designed for weights up to 180 kg.
If you need to weigh loads placed on a receiving platform, mobile scales are the right choice.

Other available types include built-in and recessed models.
Built-in scales are installed directly into vehicles, machinery, or equipment, while recessed models are mounted between floors or within special pits.

Types of Electronic Scales by Design

Weighing equipment can also be classified by its construction:

  • Hopper (tank) scales – used in agriculture, food, chemical, and construction industries for weighing bulk materials and liquids.

  • Loader (scoop) scales – installed on wheel loaders, suitable for loose materials.

  • Conveyor belt scales – integrated into transport belts to measure materials in motion.

  • Crane scales – used for suspended loads in industrial environments.

  • Monorail scales – for weighing carcasses and meat parts, typically found in cold storage and loading ramps.

  • Platform scales – for weighing heavy and large-sized loads.
